Zoning can be one of the most effective methods to direct, improve, and control the growth of a town, city, or county – if it is developed and implemented properly. When it is not, zoning can be detrimental to residents, businesses, and the public.
This is especially important when there is a focus on commercial and industrial growth, even when development could adversely affect quality of life and property values of existing neighborhoods.
The best approach to a zoning ordinance – whether new, updated, or revised – is to look at WHAT the city or county wants to accomplish, WHO it will impact, and HOW it will be enforced.
I’ve been a zoning professional for more than 35 years, from doing field work as a zoning inspector to managing the zoning office for the city of Birmingham, Alabama. In my career, I have written ordinances, developed enforcement programs, and helped educate communities and government about zoning.
I can offer a unique perspective, combining high-level professional experience in developing planning and zoning regulations with a practical, people-based perspective.
For local governments, I can help write planning and zoning laws that are practical, effective, and enforceable.
I also can assist communities, businesses, and others who are opposing proposed zoning changes because of their negative effects.
